Chanel Préférence eyeshadow palette

with 2 comments

Chanel Preference eyeshadow paletteChanel is a beauty brand with a clear focus on the Asian market, and in duty-free it is no different, with several products launched exclusively in that region. The Chanel Préférence eyeshadow palette is one such item, and as far as I know is available only on board selected airlines serving the Asia/Pacific region (I purchased mine on a Singapore Airlines flight but know Cathay Pacific and Korean Air also stock this product).

The palette follows the brand’s recent format of five colours displayed vertically and in parallel, and is officially part of the Ombres Perlées de Chanel series. The five shades are a pearlescent light pink, a pearlescent silvery taupe, a metallic gold, a complex olive-y green and an almost black with finely-milled blue/purple sparkles.

Unfortunately, while the shades look very pretty on the pan, only the last two are any good – the first three are gritty, patchy and do not apply evenly either with fingers or with a brush. I had trouble getting enough pigment on my arm for the colours to appear on the swatch pictures, which is a terrible shame as the two darkest shades (the green and the black) are gorgeous, pigmented and satiny.

You can judge by yourself from the swatches, but in my humble opinion this feels like the Jekyll and Hyde of palettes! Considering it cost S$80 (roughly $63 by today’s exchange rates), it is certainly a disappointment and not something I would recommend for purchase.

Revlon ColorStay 12-Hour Eyeshadow Palette

without comments

Launched earlier this year by Revlon as a travel exclusive, the Revlon ColorStay 12-Hour Eyeshadow Palette features eight fairly neutral shades (White, Natural, Pink Frost, Bright Rose, Dark Blue, Taupe, Dark Grey and Bronze) of the brand’s ColorStay eyeshadows, which according to the company have micro-pigments to make the product silky and saturated.

I have never personally tried Revlon’s eyeshadows so can’t tell if these live up to their claims of lasting up to 12 hours and being “crease-proof, fade-proof and smudge-proof”, but for a recommended price of $19 it doesn’t sounds like too bad a deal. This palette is available worldwide but not all duty-free stores stock Revlon – I’ve seen it in Asia, North America and South America, to name a few examples.Revlon ColorStay 12-Hour Eyeshadow Palette

MAC Packed to Go 6 Warm Smoky Eye Shadows

without comments

MAC Packed to Go 6 Warm Smoky Eye ShadowsI know it’s a bit late as this palette is nearly sold out, but it took me a long time to get my hands on the MAC Packed to Go 6 Warm Smoky Eye Shadows. In fact, I had to have it replaced three times (the boxes had the wrong palettes inside), and even then only managed to get one through the lovely ladies at Estée Lauder’s PR team.

The six colours in this lovely palette are Shroom (Satin), Naked Lunch (Frost), Tempting (Lustre), Greensmoke (Lustre), Stormy Love (Frost) and Showstopper (Matte). I am officially in love with Stormy Love and my pictures do not do it justice. As usual, this palette comes with a mini-brush (217SE).

All the pictures where taken with natural light, although the day was cloudy – click on any for a larger version. The picture on the left has swatches from the top row (Shroom, Naked Lunch, Tempting) and the last shot is of the bottom row (Greensmoke, Stormy Love, Showstopper). This palette retails for £25.50 (about $40 in today’s exchange rate) at UK airports.

Dior Rose Collection Eyes & Lips Palette

without comments

Dior Rose Collection Eyes & Lips PaletteThe full name of this palette, if the box is to be believed, is a proper mouthful: Dior Rose Collection Eyes & Lips Palette Healthy Glow Harmony. This little beauty is part of Dior’s Collection Voyage, the brand’s range of travel-exclusive products, and I purchased this palette at Singapore Changi airport en route to Thailand.

Like many of you out there, I’m not the biggest fan of mixed palettes, particularly those with powder/cream products in the same place. However, as someone who travels a lot I do recognise the practical reasons behind having everything in one set as that reduces the space and weight requirements of your beauty kit.

Thankfully, the quality of the eyeshadows in this palette follows the usual high Dior standard of the house’s popular quints. The first shade is a glittery white and the least smooth of the four in terms of texture, but it’s far from chalky. The other three shades (a shimmery pink and two gorgeous taupes of different intensities) have all the buttery goodness of the brand’s iridescent eyeshadows.

The lip shades include a clear lip balm (shade 069), two Dior Addict glosses with silvery glitter that isn’t gritty (183 and 559) and a Dior Addict lipstick (674). The palette also comes with two double-ended applicators, one for the eyes and one for the lips.

The case features Dior’s cannage pattern, like many other travel-retail products. This palette’s price varies according to the duty-free location (airports and airlines both carry it), but I paid around £35 (roughly $56) for it. MAC Packed to Go 6 Cool Smoky Eye Shadows

without comments

MAC Packed to Go 6 Cool Smoky Eye ShadowsIn addition to the three sets I mentioned earlier, the MAC Packed to Go collection also has two eyeshadow palettes that will only be available at duty-free shops. This is one of them, the MAC Packed to Go 6 Cool Smoky Eye Shadows.

Despite the name, I wouldn’t consider most of the shades in this palette cool. The six colours are Seedy Pearl, Satin Taupe, Tendersmoke, A Brown Suit, Beauty Marked and Carbon – the first four are frosts, Beauty Marked is a veluxe shade and Carbon is matte.

All the pictures where taken at night so the light is artificial – click on any for a larger version. The picture on the left has swatches from the top row (Seedy Pearl, Satin Taupe, Tendersmoke) and the last shot is of the bottom row (A Brown Suit, Beauty Marked, Carbon). I don’t know how much this palette costs but will try to find out as soon as possible.

Dior Cannage Color Collection Eye – pics and swatches

without comments

Dior Cannage Color Collection EyeRemember the gorgeous Dior Cannage Color Collection Eye palette, which I originally mentioned here? I finally caved and purchased it on one of my last trips (at London Heathrow airport terminal 3, in case anyone’s wondering). I am a big fan of Dior’s eyeshadows and have a few of the brand’s quints, so how could a product with eight shades of buttery goodness go wrong?

I am happy to say I was not disappointed. While the lighter colours are nice but a bit similar and nothing special, the true heroes of this palette are the darker shades. The black on the top left has finely-milled silver glitter, making it quite unique. The metallic burgundy under the black has gold flecks and is truly gorgeous. And the peacock blue on the bottom of the left column is sheer unadulterated goodness. Last but not least, you get a lovely chocolate brown shade on the bottom right.

Click on the pictures below to see larger versions. The swatches were photographed in natural light and you can definitely see the sparkles in the black and burgungy shades!

Bobbi Brown Pastel Eye Shadow Palette

without comments

As a lover of neutrals, I am a big fan of Bobbi Brown’s eyeshadow palettes. Anyone can create foolproof looks for day and night with them, a very important trait for someone like me, who loves makeup but isn’t particularly skillful with her brushes.

The Bobbi Brown Pastel Eye Shadow Palette is a travel-retail exclusive launched a while ago, but it is still available on board several airlines including British Airways (where it retails for £33,50, or around $50 in today’s exchange rates). It is described as a day-to-night selection of shades ranging from soft pastels to shimmering metalics, and it includes one liner shade. The colours included are Ivory, Baby Pink, Champagne Quartz, Platinum, Iced Blue, Rockstar and Mahogany. The palette also comes with a dual-ended brush for shading and lining, making it a good travelling companion for ladies who prefer subtler looks to bold makeup.

Duty-free bargain: Guerlain Fall palettes

with 2 comments

First of all, let me apologise for disappearing – I’ve been jetting around the world for work and am currently in Estonia’s capital Tallinn, which seems to be a lovely place from the little I’ve seen of it!

Today’s post is a heads-up to all you Guerlain fans out there. As you probably know already, the French brand has the most gorgeous eye palettes out at the moment as part of its Fall collection (the lovely Karla has swatched them all here, in case you’ve missed them). Each includes five coordinated eyeshadow colours and one liner shade, and the packaging – as usual – is to die for.

The only downside of these palettes is that they cost a whopping $84 each in the US and a not-too-shabby £51 in the UK (Guerlain is always cheaper in England for some bizarre reason). However, I have spotted the coveted Fall palettes at London Heathrow airport for a little over £44 each (about $66), a true bargain! Also, for those in the UK, Debenhams seems to be selling them at a discounted price online (£45.90 each), almost as good as the Heathrow prices – a good option if you’re not travelling soon.

Guerlain La Selection Couleurs Makeup Palette Eye-Lips

with one comment

Another day, another Guerlain duty-free exclusive, and this one is a particular favourite of mine. Guerlain La Selection Couleurs Makeup Palette Eye-Lips features a typical jewellery box-style case with five eyeshadow sahes, four lipsticks, two applicators and a “suedette” – which I assume is the pouch that protects the palette.

I won’t say much else about this one, allowing the picture below do the talking. :)

Lancôme Eyes Virtuôse palette

without comments

Lancôme has always been one of my favourite brands, and it also happens to be one of the most active global beauty brands when it comes to launching products that are exclusive to duty-free shops. The latest launch is the Lancôme Eyes Virtuôse eyeshadow palette, which has been inspired by global travellers and features six shades in an ultra-thin case for increased portability.

The pigmentation of the eyeshadows is good but most of them are on the frosty side, so if you are not a fan of shiny, glittery colours, this palette might not be for you. The six shades are also fairly cool, so very warm ladies could have problems making it work. It’s a good day-to-night palette, though, and has the added bonus of including a panoramic mirror – the largest I’ve ever seen in any such product.

Eyes Virtuôse is currently available in travel-retail and has a recommended retail price (in Europe at least) of €37 (about $45 in today’s exchange rates). Click on the images below for larger versions – these were taken with artificial light.
