Most makeup brands that make it in the cutthroat world of beauty products include at least one item that achieves cult status among its fans. For Bobbi Brown, shimmer bricks are one of those – and they have an interesting backstory, according to the brand:
One season, with just minutes to go before the runway lights went up, a fashion designer asked Bobbi to give all the models a lit-from-within look. So she took a shimmery eye shadow and dusted it on everyone’s cheeks—and that’s how the idea for Shimmer Brick was born.
Obvious, perhaps, but it worked for her! Shimmer bricks are handmade in Italy by pressing five different shades of “ultra-luxe pure pearl pigments” into one pan and double-baking them, the brand explains, and a variety of highlighter shades have been available through the years, some permanent and some limited.
The latest addition to the family is Bobbi Brown Wild Rose Shimmer Brick, and this one is exclusive to duty-free and travel-retail locations. As the name implies, it has a duskier, darker rose colour pattern and, if the product shot is anything to go by, could probably be used as a blush if you’re light-skinned (and use a heavier hand).
The Wild Rose Shimmer Brick is available from this month at worldwide travel-retail locations, and I’ll update this post with the price as soon as I see one in loco. Click on the picture for a larger version.
This is not Bobbi Brown’s first travel brush collection, but it’s probably the brand’s best so far. To start, the Bobbi Brown Mini Brush Collection comes in a gorgeous silver leather-like clutch with a pressure-opening clasp that can easily double up as a (very small) evening bag – if you don’t have much to carry at a special event, that is!
Inside, four brushes in travel sizes are lodged inside handy pockets: a Mini Face Blender Blush with white bristles; a Mini Sweep Eye Brush for laying down eyeshadow; a Mini Eyeliner Brush (synthetic, could be used for concealer or cream eyeshadows too); and a Dual-Ended Mini Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush/Angle Eye Shadow Brush, which comes with a cap for the eyeliner side.
The largest (face) brush measures just under 4.5 inches (about 11.5cm), so these are the perfect size to carry in your makeup bag. Despite being made in China, the brushes are also of good quality and do the job – they won’t replace your trusty Hakuhodos, but will be handy when you are on the go.
This set is exclusive to duty-free shops and the price varies according to the location, but in Germany you can find it for €56 (about $70). Click on the pictures for larger versions.
Makeup artist Bobbi Brown is known for her love of all things neutral and universally flattering, and her products usually reflect that. The Bobbi Brown Nude Pink Lip Palette is no exception: this travel-exclusive product features a selection of lipsticks and lip glosses that, according to the company, flatter all skin tones, and that can be worn alone of mixed and layered for a custom look.
This palette features three lipsticks and three glosses: Pink Beige Lip Gloss, Berry Glitter Lip Gloss, Frosted Pink Shimmer Lip Gloss, Brown Lip Color, Raisin Lip Color and Pale Pink Lip Color, each of them in a 0.028oz/0.8g pan. The set also includes a good quality lip brush.
I found that thw Brown and Raisin lipsticks were nicely pigmented and swatches easily; Pale Pink, however, hardly showed (and I am fairly pale). The lip glosses are faily inocuous and do what you expect them to: Pink Beige is a glossy gloss, Berry adds a glittery sheen and Frosted Pink is a shimmery, frosty overcoat.
This palette retails for €36 ($50) at some European duty-free locations such as Germany, but despite the “exclusivity” factor I have also found it on QVC.com (for you US ladies) priced at $45. What do you think? Click on the pictures for larger versions.
This small box comes with four products: a pot of Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Sandy Gold, a neutral champagne-like colour; a pot of Long-Wear Gel Eye Liner in Espresso, a matte brown shade; a 30ml bottle of Instant Long-Wear Makeup Remover; and the Mini Dual-Ended Long-Wear Cream Shadow/Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush, a synthetic brush in a handy size for carrying around with you.
Bobbi Brown’s gel eyeliners are renowned for their quality, and the one in this set is no different. The cream eyeshadow has a nice texture and the shade would suit most skintones. And the brush is great for a mini version.
In the UK, the kit retails for £27.20 (about $44), a very good deal if you consider the eyeliner and eyeshadow alone would cost more then £33 over here. Click on any of the pictures to see a larger version.
Following on the footsteps of sister Estée Lauder brands Clinique, EL and MAC, Bobbi Brown has launched earlier this year her own beauty balm (BB) product, which is currently available in travel-retail markets in the Asia/Pacific region. If the other BB cream launches are any indication, a global roll-out should soon follow.
The main difference between the Bobbi Brown BB Cream SPF 35 PA+++ and its predecessors is that this one comes in three shades: Extra Light, Light and Fair. Again, given the target market it is no surprise there aren’t darker shades available, but three options is still better than one!
According to the supplier, this product was created for customers who want a product “with serious skincare and makeup benefits”. It is supposed to perfect and smoothe skin’s appearance “instantly and over time”, with a buildable formula and high broad-spectrum sun protection to prevent damage.
Here’s a full list of ingredients and their benefits (from the press release):
- Light-reflective pearls to brighten dull skin.
- Emollients to enhance skin’s luminosity and offer long-term moisture.
- Scutellaria Extract, which helps reduce the appearance of discolorations and dark spots .
- Natural peptide Argireline to boost natural collagen production, minimising the appearance of lines and wrinkles and preventing future signs of aging.
- Caffeine and Sucrose to prevent redness associated with irritation and blemishes.
- Sodium Hyaluronate, which attracts moisture to skin.
- Vitamin E and Rice Bran Extract to protect skin from free radical damage.
The price of this product varies according to the country/retailer/airline, but it tends to range between $38 and $43.
The Long Wear Eye Kit comes with four items: a Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Sandy Gold, a Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Espresso (a perennial favourite), a duel-ended brush to apply both products and a practical 30ml bottle of Instant Long-Wear Makeup Remover. The only thing missing is a makeup bag, but we’ll forgive Bobbi for that ommission.
I’ll update this post with pricing info as and when I have it. The kit is available from February at duty-free stores worldwide.
As a lover of neutrals, I am a big fan of Bobbi Brown’s eyeshadow palettes. Anyone can create foolproof looks for day and night with them, a very important trait for someone like me, who loves makeup but isn’t particularly skillful with her brushes.
The Bobbi Brown Pastel Eye Shadow Palette is a travel-retail exclusive launched a while ago, but it is still available on board several airlines including British Airways (where it retails for £33,50, or around $50 in today’s exchange rates). It is described as a day-to-night selection of shades ranging from soft pastels to shimmering metalics, and it includes one liner shade. The colours included are Ivory, Baby Pink, Champagne Quartz, Platinum, Iced Blue, Rockstar and Mahogany. The palette also comes with a dual-ended brush for shading and lining, making it a good travelling companion for ladies who prefer subtler looks to bold makeup.
This month, Bobbi Brown brings back one of her limited-edition gel eyeliners as part of a set sold exclusively in travel-retail. The Black Mauve and Black Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner Set features the global favourite formula in two shades – Black Ink and Black Mauve Shimmer Ink, originally launched as part of the brand’s autumn 2008 collection. According to the company, this deep chocolate mauve variation was a top-selling promotional shade and the kit brings it back “by popular demand”.
I haven’t tried this colour but love Bobbi Brown’s gel eyeliners in general. This is a good chance for those who love Black Mauve Shimmer Ink to stock up or for those who missed out the first time around to try it now. The set includes a miniature version of the Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush- I find the short handle a bit hard to work with though as it isn’t very stable in my opinion.
Bobbi Brown has launched in March the aptly-named Face Touch Up palette, designed to keep your makeup fresh on the go. This palette contains the Light Bisque Corrector, the brand’s Creamy Concealer in Beige, Pressed Powder in Pale Yellow and Beige Foundation Stick. No eyeshadow, blush or Pot Rouge in this one!
The supplier described the palette as travel-friendly, with shades “designed to be tone-correct and to blend flawlessly”. If the colours match your skintone this looks like a great alternative to carrying all those products around while travelling – or simply reduce the clutter in your day-to-day makeup bag.
The Face Touch Up palette is exclusive to travel-retail but the company has not released its suggested price in duty-free.
